Vaal dam is home to a number of different species including carp,
catfish, mudfish, yellowfish and grasscarp. These species all love soft ground bait (mieliebom) introduced accurately on a spot between 50m and 70m from the bank. Use a trace with a spring to ensure the soft feed ball stays on during the cast. Hookbaits that work well are plain yellow and white soft floaties with small sweet white dough backing. Natural baits like dead maggots and Kariba earth worms also work well as hookbaits especially when mudfish and catfish are on the bite.
Dips you can try include Perdeby, Sniper, Scorpion, Gumtree, Paint Tartrazine, Lootie and Stuttaford.
We’ll advise you to spool up your reels with very strong line like
Sensation Pro Series14lb 0.30mm Yellow and three to four rod lengths of Awa-Shima Classic Competition 0.40mm leader line. Our Korean made power swivels and #4 Baitholder bronze hooks are perfectly suited when baits such as worms, flying ants, crickets, fish fillets and small fish heads are used. For bigger baits and whole or live fish we recommend using a #4/0 circle hook with the barb flattened.
